Opening Your US Bank Account
BoFA Guide
Bank of America (BoFA) is often the preferred choice for new H1B arrivals because they are generally more accommodating to those without an SSN yet.
Requirements
To open an account, you usually need:
- Passport: Your primary identification.
- i797B (Approval Notice): Proof of your legal status and authorization to work.
- US Address: To receive your debit card and statements.
The Process
- Walk into a local branch (it's better to make an appointment online).
- Tell them you are new to the country and want to open a checking account.
- Provide your documents. They will use your passport and visa details in lieu of an SSN.
- Once you get your SSN, remember to go back and update your profile!
Schedule an Appointment: Skip the line by booking a visit to your local branch at the BoFA Appointment Portal.
