Finding Your Home
Renting Your First US Apartment
Finding a place to live is one of the most stressful parts of moving. Without credit history, it can be challenging, but not impossible.
The Search
- Apps: Zillow, Apartments.com, and Redfin are your best friends.
- Leasing Offices: In the US, most large apartment complexes have on-site leasing offices. You can walk in for a tour.
Requirements for Newcomers
Since you won't have a credit score yet, landlords often ask for:
- Your offer letter (proof of income).
- A copy of your visa and passport.
- A higher security deposit (sometimes 1-2 months' rent) or you can get a guarantor who has a good credit score and income in the US and this helps reduce the security deposit.
Setting Up Utilities
Once you sign a lease, you'll need to set up utilities like electricity (PG&E in Cali), water, and trash before you move in.
