Getting Your First US SIM Card
Staying Connected
Communication is the first thing you need after landing. Getting a local SIM card is essential for everything from calling a cab to filling out forms that require a US phone number.
Popular Options
- T-Mobile: Often has great plans for newcomers and good international roaming features.
- AT&T: Reliable coverage across most states.
- Mint Mobile: A great budget-friendly option that uses T-Mobile's network.
How to Get One
You can ask your employer to provide you with a temporary US phone number until you get your own and this number helps when you are getting your bank account or SSN, you can then port the same number to network of your choice later.
Also, most airports have kiosks, but it's often better to visit a store in the city for better deals. You'll need your passport and a US address (even if temporary). Some providers might require an SSN for post-paid plans, but pre-paid plans are always an option without one.
