Getting Your SSN

The Social Security Number (SSN) is your primary identifier for almost everything in the US—from getting paid to opening bank accounts and renting.

The Timeline

You usually need to wait about 10 days after landing in the US before applying, to ensure your arrival status has been updated in the SAVE system.

How to Apply

1. Start Online: It is much faster to start your application online at the official SSA website.
2. Visit the Office: After submitting online, you have 45 days to visit your nearest SSA office to show your original documents.
3. Documents: Bring your Passport, Visa, i-94 (fetch it online), and i-797.
4. The Card: After the in-person verification, your card will be mailed to your US address within 2-4 weeks. Keep it safe! Do not carry it in your wallet.
