State ID / Real ID
Getting Your First ID
If you don't plan on driving immediately, a State ID is a great way to have a US-issued photo ID without carrying your passport everywhere.
What is a REAL ID?
Starting May 7, 2025 (check current dates), you'll need a "Real ID" compliant license or ID to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings. It's marked with a gold star.
How to Get One
- Location: Visit your local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles).
- Documents:
- Proof of Identity (Passport/Visa)
- Proof of SSN (SSN Card)
- Two proofs of residency (Utility bill, lease agreement)
- Fee: There is usually a small processing fee.
Tip: Appointments at the DMV are highly recommended!
